The Tease

Only 6 hours in Hawaii wasn’t fair! It was so unbelievably beautiful and I can’t believe we can’t stay longer…I was on a field program today that explored the hidden gems of Oahu. We first hopped on a bus from the terminal and right off of the bat,

Last New Port

Finally! A port where we don’t have to worry about drinking unsafe water, eating street food that will make you sick, getting bit by mosquitos and contracting a deadly disease, and really just crime in general. Japan was amazing! It was disappointing to realize that this voyage has been slowly but surely coming to and end with Japan being the last new country I will visit this go-around. Our ship doctor was relieved she didn’t have to spend another 20 minutes (like she does every pre-port) speaking about the dangers of Chikungunya or the Super bug. Unfortunately and fortunately for me, Japan was the first country I was bit by a mosquito. We were walking through Kobe

Scenic Southern China

 Wow! China was absolutely phenomenal. I spent all 6 days with my professor, Stephen Preece, traveling all around the country. We started on day one by taking a bus to visit an international company and interview the management staff. We met and spoke with them for roughly an hour and then from there, we split off on our own to conduct our own research on the company’s operations. You may have heard of this company before;

Five Day Sweat

We arrived in Vietnam on the afternoon of November 14. The first day, I did yet another city orientation through Ho Chi Minh. We went to some of the city highlights including the Reunification Palace, the Ben Thanh market, and the Bitexco Financial Tower to name a few. The tower was

Ballooning in Bagan

We arrived in Thilawa, Myanmar on November 4th. Our ship was parked on the Irawaddy River approximately 1.5 hours south of the city of Yangon. We arrived mid-afternoon on the first day and by the time we all got our passports to get off of the ship, it was about 6:00 pm. I had a field program that was to leave at 3:30 am the next morning. It was a tough decision to make,

Perfumes, Fabrics, and DEET

After an eventful 12 days at sea, we arrived in India at the Port of Cochin. While most SASer’s went north to Delhi, Mumbai, and Agra, I chose to stay more local. I remained in the southern state of Kerala for the duration of my six days. Here, I traveled within the state

Hiking and Wildlife

Bad weather in between Ghana and South Africa forced us to slow down our speed which then caused our arrival into Cape Town to be delayed. Originally, our captain said that we were planning on getting into port in the afternoon as opposed to the scheduled 8am. Turned out that we actually ended up missing the entire first day of South Africa which was a true bummer. It's also didn't help that our next port, Mauritius was

Neptune Day

I don’t have too much to write about for Neptune Day. I had no idea how commonly this tradition was practiced whenever a boat or ship crossed the equator. In the past, some sailors were actually

Ghanaian Love

Ghanaian flag table at Semanhyiya

I don't know where to begin when talking about Ghana. I did a SAS overnight field program in a small village called Senase. We spent 4 days and three nights traveling the country side and playing with all of the school kids we encountered. The name of the program was 'Senase homestay and school engagement.' After an 8+ hour bus ride

Spain: Round 2

Valencian countryside
Spain rocked. Literally. After a week long of swaying back and forth on a ship traveling through the English Channel, even as we stepped foot on land, my body was still rocking back and forth as if the ground was moving. This lasted for the entire first day that we were in Barcelona. We arrived about 5 hours later than scheduled due to unexpected weather conditions. As I stepped off the dock and walked

My New Home

Week 1 on the ship was a lot. A lot of new places to find, people to meet, but mostly, there was a lot of information thrown at us in regard to classes, rules, field programs, safety, etc… Like drinking water out of a fire hose. It was definitely overwhelming at times. Yet we made it through all of the orientation processes and began classes on Monday, the 11th. It didn’t take much longer than 2 hours to find our way throughout the ship. The first day of class

Aching legs

Lausanne Cathedral

On Monday, I flew from Iceland to Geneva where I then caught a train to Lausanne to visit

Anaëlle. Anaëlle was my 'buddy' from my last semester abroad in Switzerland. She helped me to get to my flat and show me around town when I first arrived in Lausanne in 2016. This trip, we walked and talked. A lot.
